Dan L. MitchellThis
page was written by Dan L. Mitchell, Let me tell you a little about my professional life.I have been a practicing counsellor for over 19 years now. For 15 of those years, I have been developing Therapy Online and playing a lead role in the field of online counselling. I received my Master's degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of British Columbia in 1989. Since then, I have had training and experience to address a wide range of issues, including
If you have concerns that I have not listed here, I may still be able to help. I cannot possibly list every issue that I have experience with. If I feel that I do not have the training or experience necessary, I will either get supervision or give you an appropriate referral. In terms of my professional involvement, I am a Canadian Certified Counsellor . This fact means that my professional organization, the CCACC, has reviewed my academic qualifications and my clinical experience and has affirmed that I am qualified to practise psychotherapy. I continue to be accountable to the CCACC for ongoing training and commitment to ethical standards. If you would like to verify that this is true, please view the CCACC Certified Members Directory or contact the registrar of the CCACC at 613-237-9786 or send an e-mail to info@ccacc.ca. I have been an author for several professional publications, most of which are specifically related to online counselling. I have also been a distance educator of cybercounsellors, a presenter at international conferences and a workshop facilitator, offering colleagues training in issues surrounding online counselling. My therapeutic approach is a blend of CBT, Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Experiential Systemic Therapy. You may be wondering how quickly I can type, since our fees are based on the amount of counsellor time spent responding to you with TherapEmail. I type about 35 words per minute. Sometimes I use dictation software. But my experience of writing TherapEmail is that speed is not really an issue... TherapEmail is about you and I connecting in a way that brings hope, encouragement, and solutions to problems, more than how many words I can put on a page in an hour. On a more personal note...I am 46 years old, married for 24 years to a beautiful woman whom I adore, and have two children: a 19 year old young man, and a 15 year old girl. These are the most important people in the world to me. To get even more personal, my life as a Christian is central for me. My relationship to the God of the Bible is the foundation of my life. How does my being a Christian affect my work professionally? I would say that it affects at least two processes positively: My whole life is oriented towards trying to be kind, generous, and caring. I hope this comes across in my TherapEmail. And, I have a strong commitment to doing things right -- thus my commitment to honesty, ethics, and professionalism. My intention, in all I have done and will do in Therapy Online, is to express gratitude and love for God. I am aware that a significant proportion of society has had negative, sometimes abusive experiences with organized religion. Whether your experiences have been negative or positive, I respect your spiritual journey. My commitment is to treat you only with respect, regardless of your religious or spiritual views and background. Every human being is immensely valuable. If you ask me to be your counsellor, I will walk alongside you and help you see yourself and your situation in new ways, ways that help you to improve your life. I invite you to view a record of my professional qualifications, training, and experience.
