Internet Security

This page was written by Lawrence J. Murphy,
Senior Counsellor at Therapy Online

I am very pleased and proud that we are able to provide you with state-of-the-art security. You can be assured that your online counselling experience is absolutely private and confidential.

Secure 128-bit Encrypted Registration, Payment, and Record-keeping

When you register for TherapEmailTM, all of your personal information is encrypted using 128 bit Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology. This means that you securely transmit your registration information and credit card data from your PC to Therapy Online's server. All registration and payment information is housed on a secure server, to give you the peace of mind that your personal information is stored safely.

Secure 2048-bit Encrypted E-mail

Our PrivacEmailTM system is powered by the Hush Encryption EngineTM which scrambles and encodes all of your TherapEmailTM messages so that only you and your counsellor can access them.

"Messages and attachments are encrypted before leaving the sender's computer and remain encrypted until after they arrive on the intended recipient's machine." (quoted from "Hushmail Private Label: The global solution to totally secure electronic communication, 2002")

  • Why secure e-mail is so important

Every time you send insecure email, your messages and your privacy is at risk. On the Internet, there are, unfortunately, many individuals and organizations who have no guidelines or concern for your privacy or security.

PrivacEmail keeps your email private and secure. You'll be able to speak to your counsellor or other people who have PrivacEmail accounts without fear of unauthorized access to your messages or your PrivacEmail account.

  • Web-based

Because the system is web-based, you have full access to your counsellor at all times, even while "roaming" or traveling. You only need to remember the passphrase you generate during the set up process to access your TherapEmail from any computer with Internet access.

A web-based system also means that none of your TherapEmail messages are stored on the computer you use. So, if you share the same computer with others, you can be sure they will not discover your messages.

  • Identity verification

Digital signatures are used to verify both your identity and your counsellor's identity. Digital signatures also ensure that no third party has tampered with or altered the message. You can digitally sign or verify your counsellor's signature simply by clicking a box from inside your PrivacEmail account.

  • Ease of use

There is no need to exchange public keys, as is usually the case with encryption software. You don't even need to know what a "public key" is! These processes happen securely, quickly, and behind the scenes.

  • Staying online is not necessary

It could be expensive for you to maintain your connection to the Net while reading and writing TherapEmail messages. Not with PrivacEmail! Once you are logged in, you can disconnect from the Internet and reconnect when you're ready to send a message or close the program.

  • System Requirements

The following are the system requirements for PrivacEmail:

Browsers
Microsoft Internet Explorer™ 5.x (Recommended)
Netscape Communicator™ 4.75 (Limited Support - see below)

Operating Systems
PrivacEmail is compatible with Microsoft's Windows™ 95, 98, NT, and 2000. Other operating systems, including Unix, Linux & MacOS will be supported in future versions.

JavaScript
In order to use PrivacEmail, you will need to enable JavaScript in your Web-browser. JavaScript is enabled by default unless you have changed your browser settings.
How do I enable JavaScript?

Java™
PrivacEmail is a Java™ based application. You will need to enable Java™ on your browser. Java™ is enabled by default unless you have changed your browser settings.
How do I enable Java?

Netscape™ users are restricted in the size of both plaintext messages and attachments. The amount of text that will fit into a PrivacEmail message is 32K. The total amount of information that can be sent, including both the message and the attachments cannot exceed 500K. These unfortunate Netscape™ size limitations are a direct result of how the Netscape™ browser architecture allocates memory. At the present time, Hush is unable to provide a solution that accommodates the limits imposed by Netscape™. For this reason, we strongly recommend that you use Microsoft Internet Explorer™ to access your PrivacEmail account.

PrivacEmail currently will not work with WebTV or Macintosh systems due to lack of Java support.
